Carpenter bees

Large bees that look like bumble bees but for one giveaway: a shiny, hairless black abdomen. Often seen hovering near wood structures.

What to look for

  • About the size of a bumble bee
  • Shiny, hairless, black abdomen (the key field mark)
  • Frequently hover in place
  • Males may have a pale face
Don’t mix up with
Bumble bees are fuzzy all over; carpenter bees have a bare, glossy abdomen.
